Wow, what a great post! I really like the teachings here and am happy to say that I'm using some of them in my house. I think my kids are pretty grateful and do express thankfulness regularly. Where I could improve is in limiting their material goods and encouraging more sharing of treats in limited number.

We sometimes get caught up in this thinking of how you don't want your child to be deprived in any way, but it may actually backfire by turning in to spoiling. Thanks for these great ideas!

Excellent advice. I remember making a deliberate effort to show affection in our home. I was worried that we all passed each other in the hallway without even speaking. Life got in our way. I had a family meeting and suggested that we always make it a point to say I love you, and we added hugs. That was about 20 years ago, to this day every member of our family says "I love you" tho now it is mostly when ending phone calls. I even discussed this effort with my parents and they bought right into it. It is so much more pleasant now. It isn't sloppy wet kisses, but simple, hugs and I love you. Really brings the family closer. I'll watch for more comments on this. What a great habit, especially since Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner! TY

You can also send your candy to soldiers serving in the military through the group Operation Gratitude. Some dentists even buy your kids' candy and donate to this group!

We let the kids have a few pieces on Halloween, pick one piece per day for the month of November, and then box up the rest to send (with handmade "thank you" cards) to soldiers. Giving and sharing our treats is part of our Halloween tradition and the kids love it!

We give out PlayDo instead of candy at our house. No leftovers for Mom to eat, it doesn't go stale, and with young kids, the leftover PlayDo definitely gets used.

What a great testimonial! It's great to hear how the L&L tools have made a real difference for C&J. I really need to make more of an effort to offer my children more choice than simply what they want to drink with their meals. As they said, it makes perfect sense, but we need to learn to do it. Thanks for sharing this.

I love the hormonally balanced meal, great way to think about it. And the good carbs fill you up and last longer. I need those reminders now that I go back to work (teaching). Schools are notorious for having high fat high carb foods all the time.
Have you tried almond milk for the smoothies? Just a thought, I should try it and let you know.
